Pet food recall affects Western North Carolina by Katie Berube Business IVIanager More than 471 cases of kidney failure in pets have been reported since the recall of over 95 brands of “cuts and gravy” style dog and cat food announced on March 17, resulting in at least 104 deaths. Though Menu Foods, the maker of the recalled pet food, confirms only 16 deaths to date. The Vet erinary Information Group projects a significantly higher num ber within the next several days. Scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory have identified the culprit as aminopterin, a folic acid that has served as both an abortifacient and a rodenticide, though neither use is currently le gal in the United States. Menu Foods, which manufactures pet food for most national companies, has no confirmed theory as to the source of the aminopterin or how it came in contact with the food. Many of the brands that have been recalled are readily available in Brevard at Wal-mart, Food Lion, Sam’s Club and Ingles. The 42 brands of recalled cat food and 53 brands of dog food include: Best Choice, Eukanuba, Food Lion, lams, Laura Lynn, Mighty Dog Pouch, or Roy, President’s Choice, Science Diet Feline Savory Cuts Cans, and Special Kitty. The recalled products include all wet food manufactured between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. The manufacturing date is printed on individual cans and pouches, and is more reliable than the date printed on multi-pack containers. This recall applies only to the “cuts and gravy” style food. None of the traditional “loaf’ style products are subject to this recall. Menu Foods encourages pet own ers to return any cans with the affected label dates to the place of purchase. Consumption of the tainted food can result in renal, or kidney, fail ure, a possibly fatal condition. Symptoms to look for include vomiting, lethargy, increased wa ter consumption, increased urina tion, and decreased appetite. Ani mals exhibiting any of these symp toms should receive medical care immediately.
